NATO
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a “Partnership for Peace.” The original members of NATO consisted of the United
States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on April 4th, 1949, thus establishing NATO. The organization is a collective defense, which means that if one member is attacked, the others will help as a part of a mutual defense. NATO’s headquarters are at Brussels, Belgium. NATO was originally just a political association, but after the beginning of the Korean War and the formation of the Warsaw Pact, its purposed changed. The first military intervention by NATO was in Bosnia, from 1992 to 1995, and then in Yugoslavia in 1999. The organization sought better relations with Cold War rivals, and many former Warsaw Pact states joined the alliance. The September 11 2001 attacks were the only occasion in NATO history where Article 5 of the treaty was invoked as an attack on all NATO
members. NATO is still in effect today.
