Organization of American States
The Organization of American States (OAS) is an international organization that was created to try and achieve peace, justice, independence, solidarity, and promote collaboration among the nations of the Americas.
The idea of OAS was first put into practice in 1890, with the meeting of the International Conference of American States. It
was officially renamed to the Organization of American States April 30th, 1948, as it adopted its current Charter and the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man, which was the world’s first human rights instrument. Since then, the organization has created and signed a plethora of human rights documents, including the Inter-American Commission on Human Right, and the American Convention on Human Rights.
The original goals and purposes of OAS were to strengthen the peace and security of the continent, promote and consolidate
democracy, respect nonintervention, prevent possible causes of difficulties, provide for common action in the event of aggression, seek solutions of political, economic and judicial problems, promote economic, cultural and social development, eradicate extreme poverty, and limit conventional weapons. After the end of the Cold War era, the priorities of the Organization shifted to strengthening democracy, working for peace, defending human rights, fostering free trade, fighting drug trade, and promoting sustainable development.
